Teacher-For-A-Day at HFLC

by - October 05, 2024

This special guest post is from one of our esteemed parents who took part in the Teacher-For-A-Day event during the recent Teachers Appreciation Week celebration at HFLC. By stepping into the role of our dedicated educators, Mr. Patrick Leon McNamara gained firsthand experience of both the rewards and challenges that come with teaching. In this reflection, he shares valuable insights, expresses a newfound appreciation for the hard work of our teachers, and describes the fulfilling experience of engaging with our learners in a meaningful way. We hope you enjoy this thoughtful account of a teacher-for-a-day.

HFLC Teachers' Day Celebration, Friday, 04 October 2024

"Yesterday, I had the privilege of participating in the new 'Teacher-For-A-Day' program. I must admit that I was a bit nervous, I was going to be way out of my wheelhouse for this task.

When Marie brought home Patrick and Mark from school on Wednesday, Mark handed me the lesson plan package for Third Grade English from Miss Sab. The subject matter was 'Introduction to Verb Phrases'. Well, I'm sixty-one years old so you might imagine that I have not given the difference between a main and a helping verb for quite some time. So, after dinner, I studied the lesson plan and did a bit of a brush-up on verbs and how they fit in with sentence structure. We have all heard the saying, 'You're never too old to learn,' well, you are also never too old to 're-learn.'

At the end of the day yesterday, I was glad that I was asked and had this experience. I feel honored and somehow enriched by this opportunity. Could I do this every day? No, I could not. I'm just not wired for that. This bolsters my appreciation for teachers who commit so much dedication to their craft. It does take a special level of commitment to do what teachers do. They deserve our utmost gratitude.

Let me say thank you also to Allen and Lean for their help. It would have been more difficult without you.

Thank you, everyone, and God bless."
